01 — Why it matters
Real, even when everything looks normal.

The first step is ruling out treatable causes: oral thrush, dry mouth, nutritional deficiency, diabetes, denture irritation and allergy. Blood tests are often part of that.

Where no cause is found, primary burning mouth syndrome is managed with saliva substitutes, avoidance of triggers such as SLS toothpaste, and sometimes medication through your GP or a specialist.

02 — Symptoms

How it typically feels.

The signs vary, but most people notice one or more of these:

  1. 01A scalded feeling on the tongue or lips
  2. 02Symptoms worse as the day goes on
  3. 03A persistent metallic or bitter taste
  4. 04Dry mouth alongside the burning
  5. 05Tingling or numbness
  6. 06Relief while eating or drinking
03 — Causes

Where it comes from.

The most common culprits:

Dry mouth
Medication or Sjögren's syndrome.
Nutritional deficiency
Low iron, B12, folate or zinc.
Oral thrush
Candida infection of the mouth.
Denture problems
Poor fit or allergy to materials.
Diabetes
Neuropathic change affecting the mouth.
Hormonal change
Common around the menopause.
04 — When to see a dentist

Don't wait it out.

Speak to your our practice dentist if you're experiencing any of the following — book an appointment as soon as you can:

  • Burning has lasted more than a few weeks.
  • You also have dry mouth or taste changes.
  • You're on multiple medications.
  • There are visible white or red patches.
05 — What to do about the pain

In discomfort right now?

Any ulcer, red or white patch persisting beyond three weeks needs urgent assessment to exclude something more serious.

06 — What's next

A plan, not a quick fix.

We examine your mouth thoroughly, check dentures and saliva, arrange or request blood tests, treat any thrush or dryness, and refer to oral medicine if symptoms persist.
