Gaps Between Teeth

Gaps — spacing or a diastema — can be perfectly healthy or a sign that teeth have drifted. The right fix depends on why the gap is there and whether it's stable.

01 — Why it matters
Close the gap, or move the teeth?

Bonding and veneers make the teeth wider to fill the space, which is quick but changes tooth proportions. Aligners move the teeth together, keeping natural proportions but taking months.

If gaps have appeared recently in an adult mouth, the priority is finding out why — drifting is often a sign of gum disease and needs treating before any cosmetic work.

02 — Symptoms

Things worth noticing.

The signs vary, but most people notice one or more of these:

  1. 01A space between the two front teeth
  2. 02Food trapping in a specific gap
  3. 03Gaps that have appeared or widened recently
  4. 04Teeth that look like they've splayed forwards
  5. 05A gap left after an extraction
  6. 06Uneven spacing across the smile
03 — Causes

Where it comes from.

The most common culprits:

Tooth-to-jaw size mismatch
Small teeth in a larger arch.
Missing teeth
Neighbours drift into the space.
Gum disease
Bone loss lets teeth migrate.
A prominent labial frenum
Tissue between the front teeth.
Tongue thrust
Habitual pressure pushes teeth apart.
Extractions
Space closing unevenly over time.
04 — When to see a dentist

Don't wait it out.

Speak to your our practice dentist if you're experiencing any of the following — book an appointment as soon as you can:

  • A gap has appeared or grown recently.
  • Food consistently packs in the same space.
  • You're unhappy with how the gap looks.
  • Teeth appear to be splaying forwards.
05 — What to do about the pain

In discomfort right now?

Newly appearing gaps in an adult mouth warrant a gum assessment — that combination often indicates periodontal bone loss.

06 — What's next

A plan, not a quick fix.

We assess your gum health and bite first, then set out the options — Invisalign or clear aligners to move teeth, or composite bonding and veneers to close the space directly.
