Gingivitis

Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums caused by plaque sitting along the gum line. It is extremely common, usually painless — and completely reversible when treated properly.

01 — Why it matters
Healthy gums don't bleed.

If there's pink in the sink when you brush, that's inflammation, not a sign you're brushing too hard. Left alone, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, where the bone holding your teeth is permanently lost.

The good news: at the gingivitis stage there's no lasting damage. A professional clean plus a small change to your technique usually settles it within a few weeks.

02 — Symptoms

Easy to spot once you know.

The signs vary, but most people notice one or more of these:

  1. 01Bleeding when brushing or flossing
  2. 02Red, shiny or puffy gum margins
  3. 03Tenderness along the gum line
  4. 04Bad breath or a metallic taste
  5. 05Gums that look swollen between teeth
  6. 06Discomfort with interdental brushes
03 — Causes

Where it comes from.

The most common culprits:

Plaque at the gum line
The single biggest cause.
Missed interdental cleaning
Brushing alone reaches only 60% of surfaces.
Smoking
Masks bleeding while worsening disease.
Hormonal change
Pregnancy and puberty increase sensitivity.
Diabetes
Raises risk and slows healing.
Crowded teeth
Harder to clean thoroughly.
04 — When to see a dentist

Don't wait it out.

Speak to your our practice dentist if you're experiencing any of the following — book an appointment as soon as you can:

  • Your gums bleed regularly when you brush.
  • Your gums look red or feel swollen.
  • You have persistent bad breath.
  • You've never had your gum health measured.
05 — What to do about the pain

In discomfort right now?

Gingivitis rarely hurts. If gums are painful, swollen or you have a bad taste and pressure, that may be an abscess — get seen promptly.

06 — What's next

A plan, not a quick fix.

We measure your gum health with a BPE score, remove the plaque and tartar driving the inflammation, and coach you through interdental cleaning. We then re-check to prove it's resolved.
